Houston Zoo

Located in Hermann Park, Houston Zoo is the second most visited zoo in the United States. The 55-acre zoo is home to over 6,000 animals from 900 species. Houston Zoo exhibits includes African Forest, Bird Habitats, Bug House, Elephant Habitat, Reptile and Amphibian House, Children's Zoo, and Sea lions. Other attraction of the zoo is Wildlife Carousel fun ride located at Children's Zoo area.

Houston Zoo Things to See

African Forest

African Forest exhibits of the zoo includes Chimpanzee, Masai Giraffe, Ostrich, Southern White Rhinoceros, Gorilla, and Grant's Zebra.


Bird Habitats

Bird Habitats exhibits is home to over 200 species and 800 individual birds. The exhibits is divided into three areas: Fischer Bird Garden, the Tropical Bird House, and Birds of the World. Animals to see at Bird Habitats exhibits are Wattled Curassow, Chilean Flamingo, Blue-Winged Kookaburra, Micronesian Kingfisher, and St. Vincent Amazon Parrot.


Bug House

Opened in 2014, Bug House with many glass cases is home to tiny creatures from jungles, forests and deserts across the globe.


Carruth Natural Encounters

Carruth Natural Encounters is home to animals from the river's edge, rainforest canopy, desert, and coral reef of all around world. Animals to see in the area includes Meerkat, Moon Jelly, Naked Mole Rat, Asian Small-Clawed Otter, Red-Bellied Piranha, and White-faced Saki Monkey.


John P. McGovern Children's Zoo

Children's Zoo exhibits has petting zoo, realistic bat cave, and Wildlife Carousel ride. Animals to see in this area include Bald Eagle, Bats, Swift Fox, Nubian Goat, Houston Toad, North American River Otter, and North American Porcupine.


McNair Elephant Habitat Area

The McNair Asian Elephant Habitat is home to eight Asian elephants. The area features a 7,000-square-foot barn custom-built to house the bull elephants, and a huge 160,000-gallon pool. Boardwalk with an unobstructed view of the elephants allows to watch the elephants splash around their pools.


Reptile and Amphibian House

Reptile and Amphibian House is home to venomous snakes and exotic amphibians. Animals to see here include frogs, newts, lizards and snakes from around the world.


Sea Lion Habitat

The Sea Lion Pool is located by the zoo entrance & is home to California sea lions Jonah, Cali, Kamia, TJ and her pup Max. Watch Sea Lion swim around and enjoy their pool or relax on their private beach.


South America's Pantanal

South America's Pantanal exhibit include anmials from tropical wetlands of Brazil. This exhibit displays macaws, jaguars, giant river otters, tapirs, rheas, capybaras and toucans.


Texas Wetlands

The Texas Wetlands exhibit includes three native Texas species - bald eagles, whooping cranes, and American alligators in a lush wetland habitat.


Wortham World of Primates

Nestled in a natural setting, Wortham World of Primates exhibit allows visitors to walk down the winding boardwalk and see wide variety of rare and endangered primates including lemurs, siamangs, howler monkeys, tamarins, and more.
